The economy of god is a loving exchange toward the flourishing of creation. It is an exchange made knowing that before things can flourish, they first must survive. In such an economy, each and all the needs of each and all are met and, if they are not, it is a heartbreaking tragedy and not the result of greed and indifference. This doesn't mean your child can't have piano lessons until all the children of the world are fed. It does mean that an economy of compassion begins with the basics and that none of us can survive without clean air, clean water, clean soil, nutritious foods, healthy rivers, forests and ecosystems all across the planet available for all the people to share. It also means that those who truly flourish are those who seek their flourishing, their self-actualization, and finally their self-transcendence through engagement in the community committed to the embrace and liberation of each and all. Still, some people will claim that it is their right to achieve their flourishing by taking risks with great wealth such that other people are faced with the loss of the basic means of survival. What makes it worse is that risks are also taken with the very Earth so it is left toxic and torn and those who profit from the plunder are not the ones left without means to survive amidst the rubble.

The economy of god seeks to meet the basic needs of each and all by dignifying and otherwise valuing the work of providing the goods and services of survival -those that are vital to our basic health and safety. It does not dignify or value or even honor with the name of work those activities intended only for private gain. Even among those who practice this meanness, very few are rewarded. That's why it's called risk-taking. The odds are not good. It is endemic to the design of this system that most who venture will lose. We uplift and praise those few who, having actually risked their family's security, manage to turn it all to profit. Those who risk and lose, throwing their families into poverty, or those who would never take such a risk with the lives of their loved ones, are counted dull and deserving of the dregs of the rest.
